Now what?

Less than four months to the ACES conference, and plenty of work to do: Outreach, auction items, lining up ins and outs at the hotel. But what do you think we need to do? And more importantly, what do you want to do?

I can tell you what we're finishing up some logo designs, based on some ideas from Emily; the afterparty site is close to being locked up (the Local looks to be the winner); and I'm reaching out to some journalism profs I know to spread the word. And we're working on sessions et al.

But now that the new year is here, I think we need to kick it up a notch, and I'm eager to hear how we can do it!

I'll plan to follow up with the papers I originally e-mailed, and see if I can get any papers to donate for the auctions/goodie bags.

Lauri Hopple has agreed to lead the yoga session, so we can cross that off our to-do list.

Let's see: I e-mailed a reminder to my boss about setting up computers for Net access, and about who we should talk to at the PP about goodie bag gear. I'll also ask about sponsoring coffee (a long shot, but it might work). If we can't get any java money out of the PP, maybe when I'm following up with other local papers, I can talk one of them into do a morning.

I e-mailed Hillary, head of our photo dept., and she'll donate a few pics for the silent auction. I just have to remember to remind her!

Also, our tech writer Julio is game to talk about Twitter and other such stuff, if we wanted to do a panel/session on the new technology papers are using.

Yes, I definitely think we need to more on outreach. Thanks for moving ahead with MPR. Do you have a geographical area that interests you? Or ties to a particular place or chain?

I've talked or e-mailed to the state newspaper associations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, the Dakotas and Nebraska, but I think we could start getting touch with papers in the Dakotas and Iowa.

Anyone with ties to Duluth or Fargo? Sorry if you have already mentioned this.

As for closer locally, I've traded some e-mails with Chris Ison at the U, who was going post some info on a listserv and spread the word this semester, especially with the Daily. I've also asked Amy Friebe, who was in Denver and works at the U's Center for Transportation Studies to try and pick up interested U editors not involved with the J school.

Plus, I've reached out to three J profs I know in town (two at St. Thomas and one at Bethel) but we could definitely do more with other schools.

The other things I planned to do: Get in contact with the people I know in Nebraska to see if they will spread the word. This would include the ACES chapter at the University of Nebraska. Also, I'd like to get in touch with the people in Rapid City who were in Denver last year and perhaps tap their expertise.

Other suggestions?

Sorry for being out of touch. ... I just sent an e-mail blast to all Dolan Media editors, suggesting that they send their copy editors and other staffers who use copy-editing skills.

I haven't had a lot of luck drumming a "niche" journalism session -- though I'll make another appeal. Where do things sit with session planning?
